Summer 2017/El Verano de 2017

Just like that, summer 2017 is over.  Here's a summer-y of the more interesting things we did!

En un abrir and cerrar de ojos, el verano de 2017 se acabó.  Que hicimos? Lea la lista y saber!

1.  Katy participated in the McAllen Public Library's summer reading program.  Katy reached the top prize and scored a free pass to a party at a nearby trampoline park.  It was a blast, despite the crowds, and we have since returned twice, once with friends Michael and Heidi.  Michael and Chris jumped so intensely that two weeks later, Chris is still complaining of bruised ribs every time he moves.  

Katy participó en la progamma de leer a la biblioteca.  Katy recibió el primer premio de la programma, una invitación a una fiesta a la parque de trampolines.  La fiesta fue muy divertido y habíamos regresada a la parque de trampolines dos veces, una vez con nuestros amigos Michael y Heidi.  Michael y Chris brincaron tan intensamente que dos semanas más tarde, Chris todavía tiene costillas magulladas.  

2. We went on four in-state road trips.  We mostly visited the usual suspects, but Katy and I also took a day trip to the Corpus Christi Aquarium with Sylvia, Ian, and Esli.

Fuimos en cuatro vacaciones en nuestro estado.  Por la mayor parte, visitamos familia, pero Katy y yo también fuimos al acuario en Corpus Christi con Syliva, Ian, y Esli. 

3.  Chris cut his fingers with an electric saw while cutting some plywood.  He ran into the house yelling, "Kim, emergency room," while holding his injured fingers in the air, and then returned outside to pace while waiting for me to put on a bra and grab shoes for Katy (it was a lazy Sunday morning for everyone but Chris).  Chris's cuts required several stitches and were pretty gnarly looking.  Katy refused to hold or touch Chris's hand with the wounded fingers for several weeks.

Chris cortó sus dedos con su serrucho mecánica.  Entró en la casa gritando, "Kim, sala de emergencias," mientras sostuvo sus dedos lastimados en el aire, y regresó afuera para marcar al paso mientras me esperó a vestirme y poner apuesto los zapatos de Katy.  Los cortes de Chris requerían punto de satura y fueron un poco feo.  Katy no tocaría el mano de Chris con los dedos lastimados por muchas semanas.  

4.  I organized a girl's night out at Painting with a Twist.  We booked a private event, which meant we could pick any painting from hundreds of paintings available.  In the end, our group of ladies picked a painting that looked almost identical to the painting they were doing for the general public class that night.

Organicé una noche con amigas a Painting with a Twist.  Reservamos un evento privado y por eso, pudimos escoger una pintura de los cientos de las pinturas que ofrecen.  Nuestro grupo escogeron una pintura que miró el mismo que la pintura que ofrecieron en la clase público esa noche.

5.  We had reoccurring car trouble with the Flex and were treated very poorly by a local Ford Dealership, whose poor workmanship put me in a very dangerous, possibly explosion-inducing, situation.  Chris was so stressed out that he began documenting the journey in videos and sharing them on Facebook.  As a result, Chris used Facebook more this summer than he may for the rest of his life combined.

Tuvimos problemas con nuestro coche mas de una vez y recibimos servicio horrible a la agencia de Ford cerca a nuestra casa.  El trabajo malo de esta agencia me pasó en peligro de un explosión.  La situación con el coche le dio a Chris mucho estrés, al punto que hizo un diario de videos de las problemas.  Puso los videos en Facebook.  Creo que Chris uso Facebook mas este verano que va a usar por el resto de su vida.  

6.  During one of our bouts of car trouble, Katy and I were left without a car on library day.  We rode the bus to the library.  Our normal 12 minute drive took almost an hour one way, but Katy enjoyed the novelty of riding on the bus and she looked adorable in her giraffe hat.

Una semana mientras nuestras problemas con el coche, Katy y no no tuvimos un coche para ir a la biblioteca para la hora de cuenta.  Fuimos en el autobús.  Normalmente, el viaje a la biblioteca dura 12 minutos.  En el autobús, el duró una hora.  Pero, a Katy le encantó el autobús y miró muy linda en su sombrero de jirafa. 

7.  I taught preschool crafts at VBS.  I had serious VBS spirit by the end of the week, so much so that we paid $175 for one of the painted props, a giant mural of a colorful lion painted on a black backdrop.  Two months later and the mural is still hanging at the church, partly because we have no idea how to transport it or where to put it.

Enseñé las manualidades a los niñitos en la escuela Bíblica de las vacaciones en nuestra iglesia.  Estuve de buen animo al fin de semana, tanto que pagamos $175 por un mural gigante y vistoso de un leon que fue una decoración en la escuela Bíblica.   Dos meses después y el mural todavía esta colgando a la iglesia, en parte por que no sabemos como moverlo or donde vamos a ponerlo.

8.  Katy and I had an indoor picnic one day and that began Katy's summer-long obsession with using tea towels to create indoor picnics.  Here is one of the more elaborate indoor picnics of the summer, which included a fence made of cutlery to keep the animals from running away.

Un dia, Katy y yo tuvimos un picnic en la casa y eso fue el primer de un verano llena de picnics in the la casa.  Katy usa paños de la cocina para la manta en sus picnics en la casa y por eso, nunca tengo paños limpios.  Aquí hay uno de los picnics mas elaborado del verano.  Los tenedores y cucharas en el piso a la orilla del paño fueron una cerca para mantener los animals en el picnic.  

9.  We went to our first RGV Toros game.  Katy wore a Dallas Cowboys jersey.  We are laying the foundation for a lifetime of confusion between futbol and football.

Fuimos a nuestro primero partido de fútbol de los RGV Toros.  Katy puso apuesto su camisa de los Dallas Cowboys.  Estamos preparando Katy para una vida de confusion de la diferencia de fútbol y football.  

10.  We attended the Mcallen Fourth of July parade.  The two parade participants I remember from the parade are Senator Ted Cruz, which was pretty cool, and Santa's sleigh and reindeer, which was pretty ridiculous.

Fuimos al desfile del cuatro de Julio en McAllen.  Recuerdo dos participantes en el desfile: Ted Cruz, quien me hace muy emocionado, y el trineo de santa y sus renos, que me confundió.

11.  We stood in line for over an hour one evening during a special event for a 12-minute ride on paddle boats in the reflecting pool in front of the McAllen convention center.  The wait was justified, however, because we witnessed for the first time the hundreds of migratory birds coming in to roost for the night, and because our turn on the paddleboat started just as the fireworks that evening began.

Una noche, durante un evento especial al centro de convenciones, esperamos en una linea por mas de una hora para un turno a montar hidropedales.  Valió la pena a esperar porque vimos por el primor vez este verano los cientos de pájaros migratorios que regresaron al mismo vez para dormir y también, porque nuestro turno en el hidropedal empezó al mismo tiempo que los cohetes del evento especial.  

12.  Myself and a co-teacher in Katy's Sabbath School class cleaned out the Beginner/Cradle Roll classroom at our church.  We pulled a thousand staples from the walls and threw out loads of trash in the room.  Part of the cleaning process also involved a Saturday night spent sorting felts.  The life of a 35-year-old can be riveting.

Una amiga de la iglesia y yo limpiamos la clase de escuela Sabática de Katy.  Tiramos muchas cosas viejos, sucios, y rotos en la basura, y sacamos un montón de grapas de las paredes.  También, pase un un Sábado en la noche organizando los fieltros de la clase.  La vida de una madre esta muy emocionante. 

13.   We rented a condo on South Padre Island for a weekend, and it was awesome.  We were a block from a quiet beach access.  We took our bikes and biked one evening.  We even took Doug.  Katy went to the beach four times over the weekend and loved every sandy, salty minute of it.  Katy told me at one point while showering in the condo, "Me gustaría vivir en esta casa."  Even Katy, in her 2-year-old mind, understood how awesome the weekend was.

Alquilamos una casa en la isla por un fin de semana y fue muy divertido!  Estábamos a una cuadra de un punto de accesar la playa.  Montamos en nuestras bicicletas una noche.  Doug fue con nosotros también.  Katy fue a la play cuatro veces durante el fin de semana y le encantó cada minuto salado y arenoso.  Katy me dijo, "me gustaría vivir in esta casa."  Aunque Katy sola tiene dos años, ella comprendió que era un fin de semana perfecto.  

14.  We had pictures taken for the church directory.  Our last directory picture was taken with Doug, before Katy was born.  It is amazing how much more you will spend on pictures just because they feature your child instead of your dog.

Nos tomamos fotos profesionales en la iglesia.  El ultimo foto profesional que tomamos en la iglesia incluyó Doug, antes de que Katy nació.  Es increíble cuanto mas dinero gastarás en fotos cuando las fotos incluyeron tu niño en lugar de tu pero.  

15.  We went swimming on Labor day, a perfect way to spend the last day of summer.   We swam late in the day and rainclouds filled the sky.  At the end of our swim, Katy saw our sun screen and exclaimed, in a very concerned voice, "We didn't protect our skin!"  She is definitely my child.

Fuimos a nadar el final fin de semana del verano.  Nadamos muy tarde en el día y nubes de lluvia llenaron el cielo.  Al fin de nuestra tiempo en la piscina, Katy vio nuestro protector solar y exclamó, muy preocupada, "no protegimos nuestro piel!"  Ella es mi niñita!   

Toddlers and Tampons

Katy likes to dig through my bathroom drawers while I'm brushing my teeth, combing my hair, and primping a bit in the morning.  So it didn't surprise me much that, while grabbing a box of tampons at the store, Katy asked me, "Mommy, do you need tampons?"  I was surprised, however, when a few days later, as I was walking to the restroom at the library, Katy loudly asked me, "Mommy, do you have your tampons?"

Katy le gusta explorar mis cajones in el baño mientras estoy cepillando mis dientes, peinando mi cabello, y acicalandome un poquito en la mañana.  Por eso, no me sorprendió cuando agarré una caja de tampones en la tienda y Katy me pidió,  "Mami, necesitas tampones?"  Pero sí me sorprendió cuando unos días más tarde, mientras caminamos al baño en la biblioteca, Katy me pidió, "Mami, tienes tus tampones?"

Learning English/Aprendiendo Inglés

Katy is now aware of the difference between the Spanish and English languages.  She frequently asks how to say words (mostly nouns) in English.  Her interest in knowing how to say things in both languages keeps us in stitches.

Katy ya entiende la diferencia entre Inglés y Español.  Siempre esta preguntándome como decir palabras en Inglés.  Su interés en entender los dos idiomas nos hace reír mucho. 

A few weeks ago, Chris and Katy were watching football.  Chris cheered, "Touchdown, touchdown, touchdown."  Katy copied Chris in Spanish by saying, "Toca abajo," which is a literal translation of the compound word to say, "touch down."

Mientras Chris Y Katy miraba football una noche, Chris grito, "Touchdown, touchdown, touchdown!"  Katy copio Chris en Español y dijo, "Toca abajo!"  

More recently, Katy and I had the following conversation:

Katy:   How do you say Mommy in English?  

Me:     Mommy. It's the same in English and Spanish.
Katy:   No, it's Kim!  

Katy: Cómo se dice mami en Inglés?
Yo: Mami.  Es el mismo en Inglés y Español.
Katy: No, es Kim!

On an unrelated note, someone said to me this weekend, "You're from Argentina, right?"  It was very flattering.

Hablando de otra cosa, alguien me preguntó este fin de semana, "Eres de Argentina, si?"  Yo era muy halagada.    

Wednesday/Miércoles

Today started out as an ordinary Wednesday.  After a late breakfast, I sat down at the dining room table to do some hand sewing on a felt project.  Katy sat at the table with me and immersed herself in the world of endless buttons, beads, and bobbins.  While I worked, she talked, and talked, and talked.  She made ice cream out of beads, cut threads into tiny pieces, and helped me remove soluble ink using a spray bottle.  In the end, we created such a mess on the table and the chairs and the floor that we emptied the thread box, the bobbin organizer, and the felt bins completely and began organizing everything afresh.  Katy was eager to help me wind thread, place bobbins, sort the felt, and return the items to their storage location.  Three hours flew by in a quiet and peaceful flash.

Hoy emepecé como un miércoles normal.  Después de un desayuno tarde, me senté a la mesa de comedor para coser por mano un proyecto de fieltro.  Katy se sentó a la mesa conmigo y se sumergió con mis botones, cuentas, y bobinas.  Meintras yo trabajé, ella habló y habló y habló.  Ella hizo helado con las cuentas, cortó pedazos chicos de hilo, y me ayudó a limpiar tinta soluble con agua.  Hicimos un desastre tan grande en la mesa y las sillas y el piso que vaciamos la caja de hilo, el cajon de bobinas, y las cajas de fieltro para organizar todo de nuevo.  Katy estaba anciosa por ayudarme a enrollar el hilo, arreglar las bobinas, organizar el fieltro, y guardar todas las cosas.  Tres horas pasaron en un santiamén tranquilo y pacífico.

For lunch, Katy requested a picnic.  We heated our lentils and rice, cooked our cauliflower, and filled our glasses with cold ice water.  Katy asked for "la manta especial," which is really just a thick picnic blanket, and requested that we lay it on the concrete of the back patio.  We sat on the blanket and ate in the shade of our large oak trees.  When I finished eating, I laid down on my back and looked up at the tree tops.  Katy followed suit.  We laid next to each other looking at the trees, talking about the leaves and the wind and the sun and the songs of birds and the sounds of airplanes.  We were minutes from nap time, but it was such a perfect ending to the first half of a perfect day that I didn't rush Katy off to bed.  Instead,  we laid on the blanket on the concrete patio under the shade of our large oak trees as long as Katy's toddler attention span could bear.  

Katy me pidió un picnic por el almuerzo.  Calentamos nuestros lentejas y arroz, cocinamos nuestro coliflor, y llenamos nuestras tazas con agua y hielo.  Katy me pidió "la manta especial," que solo es una manta de picnic gruesa, y pidió que la pusiéramos en el patio concreto.  Nos sentamos en la manta gruesa y comimos en la sombra de nuestras robles grandes.  Después de comí toda mi comida, me acosté en my espalda y miraba a las copas de los árboles.  Katy me copió.  Nos acostábamos lado a lado mirando a los árboles, hablando sobre las hojas y el viento y el sol y las canciones de los pájaros y los sonidos de los aviones.  Era la hora de la siesta de Katy, pero no tenía prisa a ponerse en su cama porque estábamos teniendo un final perfecto a la mañana.  En vez de eso, nos acostamos en la manta en la sombra mirando a los árboles todo el tiempo que permitió la capacidad de atención de una niña pequeña. 

Today turned out to be an unexpectedly, oh-so-humble, extraordinary day.

What is This?/¿Que es Esto?

Katy is asking more and more, "what is this?"  I am usually able to identify everyday objects for her using Spanish, which is very exciting for me because I couldn't do this two years ago.  More recently, however, Katy realized that objects are made of several identifiable parts, prompting the more specific question, "what is this part called?"  I usually don't know the Spanish word for the various parts that comprise the everyday objects Katy encounters, making me feel inadequate in the Spanish language once again.  Even worse, it is so tempting to teach Katy the English word when she asks such specific questions.  Looking up the Spanish translation usually takes longer than Katy's attention span allows, especially if it's a word that's not easily translated in google.  I hate to waste a learning opportunity due to my lack of fluency.

Katy esta preguntándome más y más, "que es esto?"  Usualmente, puedo decirle la palabra en Español, y eso me hace muy emocionado porque estoy haciendo algo que no pude hacer dos años en el pasado.  Pero más recientemente, Katy aprendió que cosas se componen de varias partes, causando la pregunta mas especifíca, "¿como se llama este parte?"  Usualmente, no sé la palabra Español para los partes que componen las cosas que Katy encuentra, causándome a sentir inadecuado en el lenguaje Español una vez mas.  Peor aún, quiero decirle la palabra en Inglés cuando me hace preguntas especificas.  Buscando la palabra Español en el internet hace más tiempo que permite la capacidad de atención de Katy, especialmente cuando estoy buscando una palabra que no traduce fácilmente.  No me gusta perder una opurtunidad a aprender.

This morning, Katy was drinking from a cup with a handle.  She pointed to the handle and asked, "what is this part called?"  I didn't know the Spanish word and by the time I looked it up, she was no longer interested.  Trying to salvage the missed learning opportunity, I refocused her attention on the cup, pointed to the handle, and told her, "esta es una manija."  I repeated myself a couple times, and then I began showing Katy other things in the house that have handles, mostly because I was trying to commit the word to my own memory.  Katy, however, really enjoyed this "game" and quickly began asking me to find more things with handles. She even identified a few things with handles herself. The whole game lasted about five minutes, but it left me so excited.  I discovered a way to continue prioritizing Spanish.  Even more exciting, had I known the word for handle in Spanish, I probably would have just told Katy the word and moved on.  I would have missed out on our exciting little game.

Esta manana, Katy estaba bebiendo de una taza con una manija cuando ella apuntó a la manija y me preguntó, "¿como se llama este parte?"  Al tiempo, no sabia la palabra para manija y por el momento lo busqué, Katy no quizo saber.  Sin embargo, reenfocé su atención en la taza, apunté a la manija, y le dije, "esta es una manija."  Lo repití varios veces y empecé a enseñarle otras cosas en la casa que tiene una manija, principalmente porque yo tratraba a aprender y recordar la palabra.  Katy le gustó este "juego" mucho y comenzó a preguntarme rápidamente a encontrar otras cosas en la casa que tienen manijas.  El juego duró cinco minutes, más o menos, pero me lo hice muy emocionada.  Descubrí una manera de continuar priorizando Español.  Aún más, si había sabido la palabra, habría dichole la palabra y nada más.  Me habría perdido en nuestro juego divertido.

Teaching Katy Spanish has been a challenging task for me. It requires a lot of extra mental exertion and overcoming fears of making mistakes.  The effort involved, however, makes small pleasant surprises along the way even more enjoyable.

Enseñado Katy Español ha sido un cometido grande.  Require mucho esfuerza mental y que no tengo miedo de hacer errores.  Pero el esfuerza lo que require hace las sorpresas buenas mas agradable.

Summer Vacationing/Vacaciones del Verano

At the end of June, Chris, Katy, and I traveled to Galveston for a weekend with Chris' family.  We rented a house in a lovely neighborhood located along a clean and empty stretch of beach.  Being within walking distance of a pleasant beach was perfect for our large group, which included several little ones.  We ate a lot, celebrated a birthday, and even managed to squeeze in a few games after all the kids went to bed.     

Al fin de Junio, Chris, Katy, y yo viajamos a Galveston para un fin de semana con la familia de Chris.  Alquilamos una casa en un vecindario bonito al lado de una playa limpia y vacía.  Estar muy cerca a una playa agradable fue perfecta para nuestro grupo largo, que incluyó siete niños chicos.  Comimos mucho, celebramos un cumpleaños y una noche, jugamos juegos después de los niños fueron a dormir.

Unfortunately, the weekend was marred by our car dying on the ferry ride to the peninsula where our vacation rental was located.  It took Chris almost 24 hours to work out a tow service for the car, during which time he spent several hours waiting at the port for more than one tow truck that never arrived.

Desafortunadamente, el fin de semana fue interrumpido cuando nuestro carro murió en un transbordador durante el viaje a la casa de aquiler.  Chris gastó casi 24 horas encontrando un servicio de remolque y muchas horas esperando al puerto por camiones de remolque que nunca llegaron.

Our car was not repaired before it was time to leave Galveston.  Katy and I traveled to the Fort Worth area with Chris's family and a few days later, we were back in Galveston to pick up the car.  This time, we were with my parents, Layla, and Nolan.  After picking up the car, we headed to the beach. It was Nolan and Layla's first visit to the beach, and they loved it!

Nuestro carro no funcionaba cuando era tiempo a salir de Galveston.  Katy y yo viajamos a Fort Worth con la familia de Chris y unos días después, estamos en Galveston otra vez para recoger nuestro carro.  Esta vez, estamos con mis padres, Layla, y Nolan.  Después de recogiendo el carro, fuimos a la playa.  Fue la primera vez que Nolan and Laya fueron a la playa, y les gustaron mucho!

After about an hour at the beach, we loaded back into the car and drove home to McAllen.  It was a long day.  We traveled from Crowley to Galveston to McAllen, a 700 mile drive that amounted to at least 11 hours in the car.  We made the trip with three kids, the first half with all six of us squeezed into my parents' Crown Victoria.  We left my parents' house before 8 a.m. and arrived in McAllen after 10 p.m.  It was a very long day.  I can't say enough to thank my parents for helping us out!

Despes de una hora a la playa, regresamos al carro and manejamos a McAllen.  Fue un día larga.  Viajaos de Crowley a Galveston a McAllen, un viaje de 700 millas que duró 11 horas en el carro.  Hicimos el viaje con tres niños y durante el primer mitad, los seis de nosotros estábamos todos en el Crown Victoria de mis padres.  Salimos de la casa de mis padres antes de 8 en la mañana y llegamos en McAllen después de 10 en la noche.  Fue un día muy larga.  No puedo decir suficiente gracias a mis padres por ayundandonos.  

My parents stayed in McAllen for a few days.  We had a full house, and we had lots of fun!

The Drive-In with Katy/El Autocine con Katy

We took Katy to the movies for the first time tonight. We went to a drive-in movie.  For most of the movie, Katy enjoyed eating snacks and climbing all over the car more than actually watching the movie.  She finally calmed down during the last half hour, during which she talked constantly.  She either narrated what she was watching or she was informing me that we were watching a "pelicuna."  It was pretty darn cute.

Tomamos Katy al cine por el primero vez esta noche.  Fuimos a un autocine.  Durante la mayor parte de la pelicula, Katy disfrutó comiendo meriendas y trepando en todos partes del carro mas que mirando la pelicula.  Finalmente, Katy se calmó durante los minutes finales, pero continuó a hablar constamente.  Me decía lo que estaba pasando en la pelicula o me decí, "estamos mirando una pelicuna."  Era bastante lindo.
