At the end of June, Chris, Katy, and I traveled to Galveston for a weekend with Chris' family. We rented a house in a lovely neighborhood located along a clean and empty stretch of beach. Being within walking distance of a pleasant beach was perfect for our large group, which included several little ones. We ate a lot, celebrated a birthday, and even managed to squeeze in a few games after all the kids went to bed.

Unfortunately, the weekend was marred by our car dying on the ferry ride to the peninsula where our vacation rental was located. It took Chris almost 24 hours to work out a tow service for the car, during which time he spent several hours waiting at the port for more than one tow truck that never arrived.

Our car was not repaired before it was time to leave Galveston. Katy and I traveled to the Fort Worth area with Chris's family and a few days later, we were back in Galveston to pick up the car. This time, we were with my parents, Layla, and Nolan. After picking up the car, we headed to the beach. It was Nolan and Layla's first visit to the beach, and they loved it!

After about an hour at the beach, we loaded back into the car and drove home to McAllen. It was a long day. We traveled from Crowley to Galveston to McAllen, a 700 mile drive that amounted to at least 11 hours in the car. We made the trip with three kids, the first half with all six of us squeezed into my parents' Crown Victoria. We left my parents' house before 8 a.m. and arrived in McAllen after 10 p.m. It was a very long day. I can't say enough to thank my parents for helping us out!

We took Katy to the movies for the first time tonight. We went to a drive-in movie. For most of the movie, Katy enjoyed eating snacks and climbing all over the car more than actually watching the movie. She finally calmed down during the last half hour, during which she talked constantly. She either narrated what she was watching or she was informing me that we were watching a "pelicuna." It was pretty darn cute.

I created this craft for pre-schoolers during a recent vacation bible school. I precut all of the pieces for the kids, making this craft cheap, fun, and easy to do. I also used the pattern and dimensions below to create a hat for myself, which means this tutorial should work for just about anyone. Have fun!

1. Download and print the lion pattern using the link provided in the supplies list. Cut out the pattern pieces and trace onto the color paper indicated (or any other colors you decide to use). Cut out the traced pieces.

2. Cut two strips of orange construction paper 1.75 inches by 12 inches using the same paper used to make the lion's mane (1.75 inches by 11 inches would probably work as well if using card stock instead of construction paper).

Place any tape that will show on the front of the mane in the center of the mane. This will allow you to cover the tape on the front side in the next step.

I turned 35 this year. No longer in my early thirties, no longer bordering on the youth of my twenties, I am now inching closer and closer to 40 and the phase of life that number represents. Maybe I'll read this someday when I'm 60 and laugh. When I do, I hope I remember that my 35th birthday was a good one, filled with energy and happiness.

I slept in. I spent a lot of time working on my blog (see the last seven posts!). I went to dinner and for a walk with my family. I have some great new work out gear for my trips to the gym. The best part of the day, however, was this teeny-tiny bouquet of flowers.

Katy had this tiny bouquet squeezed into her little fist when I saw her first thing this morning. She handed them to me as she was tripping over a pillow on the floor and said (en english), "Happy Mother's Day, Mommy." It was an incredibly heart warming moment.

The last three weeks have been a blur of road trips. On April 20, Katy and I traveled to San Antonio to meet my parents and Dennis, who was visiting from Alaska. It had been over a year since Katy and I had seen Dennis. We stayed the night in San Antonio and the next day, Katy and I headed to Kerrville to attend the fourth birthday party of my cousin's daughter, Kaylie. In total, it was a three day trip filled with driving, but it was so nice to see family and the lovely Texas wildflowers in bloom.

The last weekend of April, we traveled to Keene for a very short weekend trip. We celebrated Vivan's 30th birthday with the family and Casey's birthday the following day. It was a very short trip with lots of driving but little did we know, the craziest was yet to come.

The following weekend, the first weekend of May, we received word that Chris' Uncle Ray passed away. On Monday, May 8, at 8:30 pm, we started the 12 hour drive to El Paso. We drove all night, arrived in El Paso at 7:00 am Tuesday morning, spent the day in El Paso with family, and then started the long drive home on Tuesday evening. It was one of the craziest road trips we've ever taken, but I am glad we did it. Sharing one last meal in a house occupied by three different Sias families, attending Ray's memorial, and watching all of our little ones have fun regardless of the circumstances was incredibly cathartic. Katy especially had a fun playing with her cousin Jonah.

The one weekend we spent at home between all of our road trips was the weekend of Cinco De Mayo. We celebrated with a last minute taco dinner with four families who live in a five mile radius of our house. Having friends so close by is one of the biggest advantages of living in the city. If only our family lived this close, then we could avoid all those road trips.

I'm teaching Katy's Sabbath school class this month. The theme is Daniel in the lion's den. I made these adorable lions out of paper plates and a praying Daniel to put in the lion's den in the classroom. I also turned Katy's cardboard house into Daniel's house with the help of a little brown paint (Katy really enjoyed helping me paint the house). The classroom turned out really cute!

Doug chewed both front legs off of Katy's toy frog. I found one of the legs, but the other is likely somewhere in Doug's body. Upon seeing her frog, Katy said he needed a bandaid. I wrapped a bandaid around his front stumps and stuck his loose leg inside. I handed the frog to Katy and she said, "Now he is okay." That was not the response I expected because the frog looked anything but okay. Bandaids really are magic to a toddler.

During a recent family trip to office Depot, Katy found at her level a shelf filled with giant containers of cheese puffs. Upon seeing the bright orange cheese balls, she exclaimed (in Spanish), "Look, how pretty!" She had never eaten cheese balls before but the comedy of her statement, which she made while carrying a canister the size of her torso, meant one thing: we had no choice but to buy the cheese balls.

Chris received an amazon echo for Christmas. At frist, Christ placed the echo in our bedroom. I did not like having another woman in my bedroom. I mocked Alexa's inability to understand Chris half of the time, and I refused to use her. Alexa stayed in the bedroom for several weeks until she somehow migrated to the kitchen.
Chris recibió un Amazon Echo para la Navidad. Al principio, Chris pusó el Echo en nuestra habitación. No me gusto tener otra mujer en mi habitación. I'm glad Alexa moved to the kitchen because Katy loves to dance and has quickly learned that Alexa provides instant access to dance music for the spontaneous kitchen dance parties that have now become part of our weekly routine. It starts with Katy bouncing into the kitchen saying she wants to dance or asking for music. Sometimes she will run over to Alexa and start reaching for buttons on the top of the Echo, which she can't actually see because she is too short. Eventually, Chris or I will tell Alexa to play dance music and the dancing beings.

Katy's dancing is ridiculously uncoordinated, bouncy, and consists of a lot of falling. Dance moves with her hands require a lot of focus, usually to the point that the rest of her body quits moving and she stares with intense focus on her hands. Sometimes she squats low, sticks out her booty and starts swiveling back and forth, at which point I ask myself, "Where did she learn that?!?!?!" She dances on her back, tries to moonwalk, and tries to mimic anything Chris and I do. But most of the time, Katy's dancing is a combination of skipping and jumping in circles with her hands in the air until she falls on the floor. It's an incredibly contagious dance style.

The kitchen dance parties are one of my favorite things right now. They happen spontaneously, although most frequently between lunch and nap time and between dinner and bedtime. There's something about a full tummy and impending sleep that sends Katy into a dancing frenzy. Sometimes we dance for just a few minutes and other times we dance until we're clammy.

Chris started calling Katy la borracha (drunk) chacha because she falls so frequently when she dances. I didn't think she understood what Chris was saying until a recent trip to San Antonio, when Katy brought me this coin purse she found in a store and called it pretty.

During a recent trip to visit my cousin Sara, Katy went to a glow dance with my cousin's daughters. It took Katy a while to warm up to the dark room full of activity and glowing accessories but eventually she warmed up and with a little coaxing, she was dancing somewhere other than the kitchen.

As I watched her copy my movements, I told her, "You are a copy cat." She replied, "You are a copycat," and then again, "You are a copy cat." She likes to repeat any English words I speak to her and in doing so, proved my point about her being a copycat. Then she said, "Eres un gato," followed by confused mumbling as she tried to figure out what copy means and how to translate it. It's so awesome to watch her bilingual brain in action and also, to know I'm not the only one who struggles with idioms.
